In April 2024, Southern Scholars will celebrate our fifth year in operation! To commemorate this incredible milestone, we are on a mission to provide scholarships to our largest class ever - Five new deserving students from low-income communities in the rural South.
Three of these exceptional students will be honored with the prestigious $18,000 Dr. Doretha Pressey Scholarship, while the remaining two will receive the esteemed $12,000 Clara Mae Coleman Scholarship - bringing our total commitment to an impressive $78,000 and increasing the total number of Scholars (and graduates) we support from 14 to 19.

In our current service areas of Orangeburg County and Bamberg County, SC, a staggering 81% and 86% (respectively) of elementary and secondary school students are living in poverty. This is not just a statistic;it represents real families striving to overcome the challenges of economic hardship. But, there is hope. Studies consistently demonstrate that completing college significantly reduces poverty rates, with bachelor's degree holders earning an astonishing 84% more over their lifetime than high school graduates. Education is not merely a pathway; it is the key to breaking generational cycles of poverty.
